Dual Flush Toilets

Here at Coordinated Kitchen & Bath in North Vancouver we like to use materials that are both beautiful and sustainable. The dual flush toilet mechanism allows both to co-exist.

The dual flush toilet was originally invented in Australia as a way to conserve water in a climate where water is typically scarce. The toilet is increasingly being used around the world.

Standard toilets use a siphoning tube to remove waste from the toilet bowl. A high level of water enters the siphon after the toilet flush fills the siphon and pulls waste and water down the drain. When air enters into the tube again, the siphoning action stops. Dual flush toilets use a larger trap way than siphoning toilets do and a flush mechanism that pushes waste down through the drain. Because no siphon is used, dual flush toilets require less water per flush.

Through the use of half-flushes for liquid waste and reduced water usage on full flushes, the dual flush toilet can save over 60% more water than the standard toilet.

While the cost of purchasing a dual flush toilet can be a little more than for a standard toilet, here at Coordinated Kitchen & Bath we hope you take a good look at what is available on the market before purchasing a new toilet.

So you are thinking about renovating?

Here at Coordinated Kitchen & Bath in North Vancouver we are often asked how best to prepare for a Kitchen renovation or Bathroom renovation. We have created a list to better assist you in thinking about and preparing for your renovation.

Outcomes and Desires:

This is probably the most important step you can take when thinking about your renovation. During this stage ask yourself a few important questions:

What will the space be used for?
How do you currently live in the space and how do you desire to live in it?
Will there be any foreseeable life changing circumstances (children, parents moving in, etc) that should be worked into the space?

Think about how you currently use the space and how you would optimally like to inhabit it. At Coordinated Kitchen & Bath we would love to work through and design what this practically would look like in your Kitchen and/or Bathroom.

Draft a Timeline:

Create a timeline about when you will need your kitchen and/or bathroom renovation completed by. However, in drafting a timeline be realistic, don’t enter a project under the pretenses of false urgency (family coming, etc), as this will create unnecessary stress and anxiety. Materials, such as kitchen cabinets, countertops, sinks, and faucets take time to fabricate and install, keep this in mind when drafting a timeline.

Draft a Budget:

Contractors and designers will not best be able to serve you without an idea of what the budget on the project will be. The budget will determine what materials can be used and what in the space can be changed.

Green Renovation Guide

Here at Coordinated Kitchen & Bath we have put together a quick guide to help "green" your home renovation.

When doing a renovation there are numerous ways you can help to “green” your home. From fixtures to insulation, there are many products that can efficiently reduce your environmental impact. When “greening” your space there are three important things you should take into consideration.

• Increasing energy and water efficiency in your space 
• Ensuring that there is clean and circulating air indoors
• Choosing resources that environmentally friendly

Here are some ideas to bring these ideas into practice.

1. Re-do a space using existing materials, whether this means using the structure of a well-built older home or simply re-facing old cabinets, this can help ensure you get the look and functionality that you want without creating excess waste. 
2. Use materials that are manufactured and sourced locally.
3. Use an efficient water heater. This will help you save on you energy bills while reducing your environmental footprint.
4. Bring in more natural light into the space, again this will help reduce your energy bills while improving the ventilation and look of the space.

Stainless Steel Sink Guide

Here at Coordinated Kitchen & Bath in North Vancouver we have created a rough guide to purchasing a stainless steel sink. Whether a top-mount or under-mount sink, there are some important considerations to be made before purchasing a stainless steel sink for your kitchen.

Gauge: Stainless Steel Sinks come in a number of different gauges. Gauge refers to the number of times that the stainless steel is forced through a gap during its formation process. Each gap gets subsequently smaller with each pass, thereby, the lower the number, the thicker the stainless steel. Typically people purchase 18 gauge sinks. Commercial sinks are usually 14 – 16 gauge and come in limited varieties of style.

Bowls: Double-bowl sinks allow for greater flexibility in food preparation and washing. However, dependent on the look, feel, and application of your kitchen a single-bowl sink could be the right fit. Consider the application of your kitchen and how you intend to use it before leaning one way or the other.

Depth: Sink bowls are often 6 – 12 inches deep. Consider the height or you countertop and how comfortable it will be to reach down into a deep sink bowl before purchasing.  With under-mount sinks take into consideration the depth of the countertop as well, as it will add to the overall depth of your sink.

Kitchen Cabinets: Materials

Whether you are remodeling or renovating your entire kitchen, the cabinets will play a primary role in the overall mood, look, and feel of your kitchen. There are many different species of wood to choose from for your kitchen cabinets. At Coordinated Kitchen & Bath our design team believes choosing the right wood, finish, and cabinet style for your kitchen is imperative to creating the space and feel you desire. Below is a rough outline of different woods species popular for kitchen cabinets in Vancouver. Different woods, finishes and styles are available through partners Columbia Cabinets and Hertco Kitchens.

Birch: A dark and strong wood. Birch is known for absorbing stains, this allows it to ‘mimic’ other woods, passing itself off as a more expensive wood. Birch is prone to irregular colouring; this makes it a relatively inexpensive choice for kitchen cabinets.

Cherry: A hard wood that can withstand bumps and knocks. Cherry is a versatile wood that can be used for both traditional and contemporary looks. The reddish wood tends to darken over time thereby changing the tone and feel of your kitchen.

Hickory: Hickory is a pale wood that can be stained. However, its natural complexion is often best highlighted through the use of clear or natural finishes. Hickory is typically used to create a rustic or traditional feel in your kitchen.

Maples: Another commonly used wood, Maple is found in a wide variety of species. Maple is a fine-grain and lightly coloured wood. Maple is often finished with a clear or natural glaze, this helps give the kitchen a ‘lighter’ feel.

Oak: One of the most commonly used woods for kitchen cabinets; Oak tends to be the most economical choice. There are numerous species of Oak, the two most popular being Red Oak and White Oak. Red Oak is strong and durable. It comes in a wide variety of finishes, the two dominant being natural and honey. Red Oak is most often used for traditional kitchen cabinet styles. White Oak tends to be stronger and more durable that Red Oak. White Oak tends to have more subtle grains and a more golden hue.

Pine: A popular choice for creating a rustic feel in your kitchen. There are three different types of Pine - ponderosa, yellow, white. Pine is a pale wood that can be easily stained. It is also one of the softest woods available for use and thereby can dent easily.

Coordinated Kitchen and Bath would like to welcome our newest member to the team. Allan Wray will be replacing Morgan Weldrick, who moved to White Rock after two years with us.

Allan has NKBA certifications from the National Kitchen and Bath design and project management program offered through VCC. The NKBA is the international standard for kitchen and bathroom design. Allan also has project management and construction experience in home renovations.

From design to completion, Allan's meticulous attention to detail will transform your space into the perfect marriage of aesthetics and function. His high level of involvement during your renovation ensures the process is smooth and uncomplicated. As an active member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, Allan continually enhances his education and keeps abreast of innovative products.

Dear Mr. Phillips,

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how pleased I am with the work you did in designing and building our new en suite for the master bedroom. Of the many people we asked to do this job, you were the only one who came up with the right solution. The bathroom is a wonderful addition to our house and a lovely space to use.

It was an added benefit to feel so comfortable with you to have most of the work done while we were away on vacation. Your carpenters, plumbers, and other craftsmen were always polite, tidy, quiet and efficient. I was particularly impressed with the manner in which Siegfried Penner conducted the construction of the bathroom and how all the finishing was done. The finishing was done so well that it is difficult to tell where new meets up with existing materials. The choice of trim moulding, panelling, etc was done in such a way that the new bathroom looked very much a part of the house.

Michael, your advice in selecting fixtures, sink, and overall design was great. The bathroom suits the age of the house and adds a wonderful new depth to our bedroom. We are pleased.

Dear Michael & Paula:

Our two new bathrooms have been finished for a few months now and we love them. Even our cat has taken to keeping us company in the showers (at the dry ends of course). The only negative part of the renovation has been an increase in our water heating bill as we seem to be languishing in the showers longer than before.

On a more serious note, it was truly a pleasure to work with you and Paula. Your knowledge and experience with bathroom design, fixtures, building products and methods saved us valuable time: in making the right decisions and selections to proceed with the project. I recall giving you my 10 layout alternatives, none of which I felt were quite right. Your idea to convert the existing windows to flush glass block, and put the shower and tub against the outside wall was the idea that made the layout work.

Choosing tile, cabinet styles, colours and other decorative items was a breeze with Paula's guidance. After spending a Saturday in several tile stores, we left disappointed because only the high priced products met our expectations. But a few hours with Paula, and her display of pre selected, and reasonably priced product was all it took to make our tile and colour choices.

We also felt the construction went well. The work was sufficiently complete for Joni's stroke club barbecue and your sensitivity in getting our bath working when Lexi came down with chicken pocks was sincerely appreciated. The trades people you employ are qualified and friendly and our kids enjoyed watching the whole process. Adam still talks about his buddy Ivan the tile setter.

We have and will continue to recommend your company to family and friends who are considering a home renovation project. Thanks again for two beautiful bathrooms.
